ronaldo-zidane-690x396

Zidane stated that it was only normal for Ronaldo to be angry, but insisted that it was nothing serious.

Its gross earnings rose by seven per cent to N274.5 billion against N257.6 billion in the corresponding period of 2015.
He said that the growth in gross earnings was driven by 17 per cent increase in interest income on the back of continued growth in the bank’s core business.
Similarly, the bank’s operating income increased by 12 per cent to N199.3 billion from N178.1 billion in 2015, while customer deposits grew by 25 per cent to ₦2.10 trillion from ₦1.68 trillion in December 2015.

New Report Says None Of The Released Chibok Girls Was Sexually Abused

chibok-girls

Not a single out of the 21 released Chibok schoolgirls was assaulted during the two years spent in Boko Haram captivity.
Quoting a source close to negotiations to free the remaining of those abducted in April 2014, NAN dismissed reports that the only girl who came back with a child was impregnated by an insurgent.
The agency said the girl was pregnant before her abduction.
“The girl and her parents have confirmed this. The child is not a Boko Haram Child,” the source reportedly said.
“None of the girls released was sexually harassed or abused while in captivity by their abductors. “The current state of the girls is a source of joy as they are receiving the best medical, psychological and other forms of support from the authorities as directed by the federal government.
“All groups including the families, The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) and Chibok Community are happy with their condition as medical experts work to address their health conditions.
“The girls have been visited by members of International Committee of the Red Cross, which played a great role in getting the girls freed.
“It is obvious to everyone that having been in captivity, the girls were traumatized but since their release, they are showing signs of recovery.” Speculative reports about the state of the freed captives, are said to be creating stumbling blocks to further talks with the insurgents.
The insurgents were said to be angry with government for breaching some understanding reached with them when the 21 girls were being handed over on October 13.

Chibok Community Demands This Special Treatment From Buhari For 21 Rescued Girls (See Demands)

 buhari

President Buhari and Vice president, Yemi Osinbajo in a group photo with the 21 freed Chibok Girls after receiving them at the State House
After going through a harrowing experience in the hands of their Boko Haram captors for around two years, the Chibok community has demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari send the 21 rescued girls abroad to continue their education.
Vanguard reports that chairman of Chibok local government Ya’aga Yarakuwu made the call recently to “underscore the importance of the girls’ education”.
Yarakuwu alongside representative of the girls’ parents thanked God, the President and the Nigerian security agencies for ensuring the safe return of the girls.
He however highlighted the challenges bedeviling the community which he said included lack of roads and schools and appealed to President Buhari to come to the aid of the community, urging for deployment of more security personnel to the area.
He concluded by urging the President to take the girls abroad to further their education because most of the girls’ parents were dead as a result of high blood pressure.
Meanwhile, Yarakawa has debunked statements that Chibok schoolgirls were unwilling to return back home.
Speaking exclusively to Leadership on Thursday, October 20, Yarakawa said that he was positive that the remaining abducted girls are not married out by their captors and will return back home safely.
He described the reports as “rumours” adding that the statement was false and baseless adding that the report should be disregarded.

S3X TRAGEDY | Man Dies In Hotel Where He Went To Sleep With Female Customer

The stupidity of some guys to want to sleep with any lady they are having a transaction or interaction with…if a lady is being friendly with you or doing business with you, the next thing is s*x. Hmmmm!
Sadly, the young man above is the latest victim of this mess. He’s a mobile phone software marketer. He was found dead in a hotel room in Ovwian area of Delta State after allegedly taking one of his female customers who could not pay for the job he did on her phone to a hotel for s*x.
The guy, identified as Nelson Eni Millz operating at Robinson Plaza along Deco road in Warri, was said to have requested that the female customer ‘pay in kind’ since she could not pay the entire fee.
According to SCN, the incident happened last Thursday at Treasure Land Hotel in Ovwian where the victim had lodged with the female customer identified as Helen Obiogu.
Conflicting reports had it that the Nelson slumped and died while having rounds of s*x with Helen, but another account had it that he died from poisoning.
A source at Robinson Plaza, where the lady suspect had gone to purchase the mobile phone said that Helen was at the phone plaza last Wednesday to buy a handset and download music and applications, but was left with N5,000 after buying the phone.
It was said that Helen, who is now in police custody, pleaded with late Nelson to let her go and come back another day to complete the payment but he had refused and insisted she met him in a hotel.
A source alleged Helen eventually went to the hotel and Nelson sent her to buy drinks for them. The source also alleged Helen could have poisoned Nelson’s drink which eventually led to his death.
Nelson, in his late 20s, left behind two kids.
A staff at Treasure Land Hotel said Helen had almost fled from the hotel when she was arrested by the hotel security guards on duty.
The security guards had noticed that she was crying and was in a haste to leave the premises.

Herbalist sent me to bring my late sister’s bones for rituals – Suspect confesses in Ogun [PHOTO]

suspects-caught-with-human-parts-in-ogun
Two suspected ritualists have been apprehended in Ogun state with human bones. The suspects, Wole Oke, 38, and Wasiu Adesina, 30, were nabbed on Saturday by police operatives attached to the Oke Itoku Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, CSP Abeni Farinre.
Confirming the arrests, the state Police spokesperson, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement made available to newsmen at the weekend, said the duo was arrested at Ijebu, Idi-aro area of Abeokuta, the state capital, by police officers on patrol.
The statement noted that Oke and his accomplice, upon sighting policemen, took to their heels with a leather bag containing human bones, adding that the police gave them a hot chase and apprehended them.
The statement read: “On searching the bag with them, it was discovered that it contained human bones.
“Upon interrogation, one of the suspects, Wole Oke, confessed that they were the bones of his sister who died four years ago.
“He further stated that one herbalist sent him to go and bring it for money ritual purpose.
“The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, for further investigation.
“He also directed that the herbalist mentioned be arrested without further delay,” the statement added.
The police image maker reiterated that the state will not contain ritualists and crime suspects alike as the command was working tirelessly to see to their end.

Buhari working himself to the bones for Nigeria – Tunde Bakare

 Pastor-Tunde-Bakare
A good leader must have wisdom and courage to take those actions that need to be taken. What I’ll implore President Buhari to do is to let Nigerians know concerning the things that will start happening in October. He should let them know that, ‘See, this is where we are and this is where I want to go and to go between here and there, there’s a gulf and we need to blow the bridge. These are the materials we’re using to build the bridge.
“These are the men I want to use and I’m giving them so-so timeline to deliver. This will encourage the people to know their president is talking to them and we pray that the communication should continue, but as far as working is concerned, the man is working himself to bones. I also think the APC should put its house in order and stop fighting because when a chicken starts to eat its intestine, the end is near,” Bakare added.
Speaking further on the President’s focus on fighting corruption and how it is believed to be affecting other areas of governance like the economy, he stated, “In fact, I don’t think President Buhari is the one fighting corruption. I only said it’s his vision. He’s not the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, he’s not the Attorney General of the Federation, he’s not the Inspector-General of Police.
“What needs to happen is to have a formidable team with clearly stated responsibilities. The President is one man and can’t do all the things I’ve enumerated on his own. When you have a team that is working together, things will improve because you cannot say this is what I will do and leave the other areas to suffer. It’s not going to augur well for the country. There seems to be a disconnect somewhere.
“However, in the month of October, I’m sure we will begin to smile. We may not laugh but I’m sure we will begin to see certain changes in certain directions,” the cleric said.

Edo election: Ekiti IPAC lauds INEC’s neutrality

elections-in-Nigeria

The Ekiti State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for maintaining substantial neutrality in last week’s gubernatorial election in Edo state, urging the commission to replicate same in the November 26 governorship poll in Ondo State.
It also commended the electoral body over the way it settled the logjam created by the presentation of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during the Edo governorship election.
The Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi factions of the party had presented two different candidates for the election, which was eventually won by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Godwin Obaseki. INEC had discretionally recognized Ize-Iyamu, who was put forward by the Makarfi
group.
Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, the IPAC chairman in
Ekiti, Dr Dele Ekunola, said INEC has done the country proud by conducting a credible election that complied substantially with provisions of the Electoral Act.
On the crisis rocking the state chapter of the party, which polarized the body into two, Ekunola clarified that the feuding groups had fused into one after reconciliation, which he said led to the
election of new executives recently in the state.
Those elected were: Dr Ekunola as Chairman, Hon Ilesanmi Omolayo(Vice
Chairman), mallam Jimoh Saheed (Secretary), Fred Iyaniwura(Publicity
Secretary), Chief Moses Awogbemi(Financial Secretary), Rufus
Alabi(Treasurer) and Ileanmi Josiah(Assistant Secretary).
Ekunola particularly expressed satisfaction with INEC’s disposition to
neutrality, which he said made the opposition PDP to be able to give
the ruling party, APC, a run for its money in the highly pulsating and keenly contested election.
“When the election was postponed from September 10 to October 28, I
felt the INEC only postponed the evil day. But it gladdens my heart
that nobody died during the election. No bloodshed, no arson attack
and even the protest that was held by the PDP against the election
were peaceful.
“INEC even settled the PDP confusing candidature with ease. We all the
existing political parties in the state are pleased with INEC neutrality.
“All these showed that democracy has taken a deep root in Nigeria and
we appeal to INEC to repeat the same feat in Ondo State,” he said.

Goodnews! Kerosene To Sell For N150 In Fuel Stations Nationwide

2

Dr Maikanti Baru, the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that the official pump price of kerosene is now N150 per litre.
According to The Guardian, the NNPC boss, who stated this during a courtesy visit to the Ogun state Governor Ibikunle Amosun in Abeokuta, recently, called on other retail outlets to emulate the NNPC mega stations that sell the product at N150 per litre, from N180 per litre.
He said: “We are committed to promoting the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as an alternative choice for home cooking, which is also available at our NNPC retail stations.”
He also expressed the readiness of the NNPC to complete the ongoing Escravos to Lagos Pipeline System 2 (ELPS2) project in the last quarter of this year to boost gas to power in the country.
Baru said the 36-inch and 342-kilometre gas pipeline project would double the capacity of the existing ELPS, thereby improving gas supply to Ogun and environs, adding that the recent achievement of security agencies in safeguarding the Atlas Cove to Mosimi System 2B pipeline would not have been possible without the support of the host communities and state government.
In a similar development, Ismaila Chafe: President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said Nigeria would be saving 10 billion Dollars annually from importation of petroleum products as the nation’s four refineries would soon be fully repaired.
The president disclosed this in a nationwide broadcast to mark the nation’s 56th Independence Anniversary on Saturday.
The President frowned at the situation where half of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings were being spent on importation of petroleum and food items.
He attributed the current socio-economic hardship being experienced in the country to inability of the previous administrations to save for the “rainy days’’.
“Historically about half our dollar export earnings go to importation of petroleum and food products, Nothing was saved for the rainy days during the periods of prosperity.
“We are now reaping the whirlwinds of corruption, recklessness and impunity.
“There are no easy solutions, but there are solutions nonetheless and government is pursuing them in earnest.
“We are to repair our four refineries so that Nigeria can produce most of our petrol requirements locally, pending the coming on stream of new refineries. That way we will save 10 billion USD yearly in importing fuel.’’
He said there were only two system collapses between June and December 2015, while the over-all system suffered 16 system collapses between March and July 2016 alone. In this respect, the Mambilla Hydro project, after many years of delay is taking off this year.
Buhari said his administration’s economic revival strategy was centred on the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.
According to him, the ministry will lead and oversee the provision of critical infrastructure of power, road transport network and housing development.
He said power generation in the country had steadily risen since his administration came on board from three 3,344 megawatts in June 2015, to a peak of 5,074 megawatts in February.
“For the first time in our history, the country was producing five thousand megawatts.’’
He, however, lamented that renewed militancy and destruction of gas pipelines had continued to cause acute shortage of gas and constant drop in electricity output available on the grid.
The president also noted an appreciable improvement in power transmission between June 2015 to September 2016.
He said there were only two system collapses between June and December 2015, while the over-all system suffered 16 system collapses between March and July 2016 alone.
He attributed the incidents to vandalism by Niger Delta militants.
“As I have said earlier, we are engaging with responsible leadership in the region to find lasting solutions to genuine grievances of the area but we will not allow a tiny minority of thugs to cripple the country’s economy.
“In the meantime, government is going ahead with projects utilizing alternate technologies such as hydro, wind, and solar to contribute to our energy mix.
“In this respect, the Mambilla Hydro project, after many years of delay is taking off this year.’’
According to the president, contract negotiations for the Mambilla project are nearing completion with Chinese firms for technical and financial commitments.
He said the project would be jointly financed by Nigeria and the Chinese-Export-Import Bank.
Buhari said power purchase agreements on 14 Solar Power Projects had been concluded.
“Hence, the plan to produce 1,200 megawatts of solar electricity for the country will be realized on schedule,’’ he said.
Note: As regards the price of kerosene, Naij.com would love to know what the situation is around you area. Do well to send your feedback in the comment section provided below.

Recession: Sokoto Governor, Tambuwal says Buhari will fix Nigeria

speaker-tambuwal

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Friday expressed confidence in the ability of President Muhammadu Buhari to fix Nigeria.
Tambuwal has also maintained that,Nigeria would soon exit the current recession.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that, Tambuwal spoke to newsmen in Sokoto shortly after the conduct of two prayer sessions to mark Nigeria’s 56th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
He said: ”Nigerians have unshaken confidence in Buhari to salvage Nigeria.
”We should continue to cooperate and support to take Nigeria to greater heights.”
“Tambuwal further implored Nigerians to continue to support leaders, at all levels.
He also urged Nigerians to sustain their fervent prayers, for sustainable peace, unity and Socio-economic prosperity.
” There is no country like Nigeria in the whole of the world in terms of human and material resources.
” Nigerians can excel in all endeavours and anywhere they find themselves, globally.
” Nigeria will also continue to provide leadership to Africa, as well as blossom as an indissoluble country.
” Nigeria is currently just passing through a developmental phase, just like many other nations like USA had done,” the governor, averred.

Edo Election: Buhari has shown he belongs to someone – PDP

buhari-reading-300x271

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of manipulating the Wednesday’s Edo governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had on Thursday declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Godwin Obaseki as the winner of the keenly contested governorship election in the state.
Following Obaseki’s emergence, Buhari had congratulated the governor elect, saying his victory was good for democracy.
However, PDP while reacting to Buhari’s congratulatory message said the president had shown that he belonged to somebody, a diversion from his inaugural speechhttp://dailypost.ng/2015/05/29/i-belong-to-everybody-i-belong-to-nobody-buhari-takes-first-shot/ where he had said, “I belong to nobody and I belong to everybody.”
A statement by the opposition party’s spokesperson, Dayo Adeyeye insisted that the election was rigged.
The statement reads, “President Buhari’s congratulatory message to Godwin Obaseki has finally revealed his hand in the Edo guber election imbroglio. We note with sadness that he had never extended similar congratulatory messages or goodwill to PDP candidates who were victorious in various elections since he assumed office.
“In Bayelsa state where his party with the support of security agencies virtually declared war on Governor Seriake Dickson and the people of Bayelsa, the president refused to congratulate the PDP candidate who against all odds managed to survive the APC onslaught.
“His aides claimed then that the president was not in the business of congratulating election winners. Why the sudden change of heart now if we may ask? The only plausible explanation is that the president was eager to confer legitimacy on an otherwise badly flawed election in which his party acted like Shina Rambo, the notorious armed robber. Only that this time they were robbing the people of their votes.
“The action of the president belies his statement that he belongs to nobody but belongs to everybody. The president has shown where he belongs. We recall that President Jonathan dutifully never failed to congratulate opposition candidates who won elections during his tenure, including Adams Oshiomhole. That is what is expected of a statesman.
“We did not lose the gubernatorial election in Edo state. We can therefore not be described as ‘bad losers’ according to the APC state chairman in Edo state, Anselm Ojezua. We were robbed by very shameless election riggers.”

Recession will not last – Buhari assures Nigerians

buhari-3373847b

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration is trying to do the right things in addressing the economic recession.

The president made the statement in a nationwide broadcast to mark the country’s 56th Independence Anniversary on Saturday.
Buhari, who acknowledged that recession for many individuals and families was real, gave an assurance that the situation would not last long,
He commended all Nigerians for making “incredible sacrifices.’’
“I know that uppermost in your minds today is the economic crisis. The recession for many individuals and families is real.
“For some, it means not being able to pay school fees, for others it’s not being able to afford the high cost of food (rice and millet) or the high cost of local or international travel, and for many of our young people the recession means joblessness, sometimes after graduating from university or polytechnic.
“I know how difficult things are and how rough business is.
“All my adult life I have always earned a salary and I know what it is like when your salary simply is not enough.
“In every part of our nation people are making incredible sacrifices,’’ the president said.
He reassured Nigerians that he would continue to ensure honesty and transparency in governance and stop the stealing of Nigeria’s resources.
The president said the steps would ensure provision of qualitative healthcare, security, education, infrastructure for commerce and additional jobs for the youth.
“I ran for office because I know that good government is the only way to ensure prosperity and abundance for all. I remain resolutely committed to this objective.
“I believe that this recession will not last.
“Temporary problems should not blind or divert us from the corrective course this government has charted for our nation.
“We have identified the country’s salient problems and we are working hard at lasting solutions,” Buhari said. (NAN)

Fashola reveals amount spent on road projects under Buhari

Fashola identifies flouting of law and order as Nigeria’s greatest enemy

The Federal Government has, so far, spent N73 billion on road projects across the country.
The Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, disclosed this in Katsina, on Thursday, at the 22nd National Council of Works meeting.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the meeting has “Prioritisation and Optimisation of Allocated Road Infrastructure Funds” as its theme.
The minister said that the expenditure had been worth it because it would enhance the socio-economic development of the country.
He added that the amount spent was part of the N266 billion appropriated in the 2016 federal budget.
He noted that the money was used to settle contractors’ liabilities and road rehabilitation across the country.
He, however, said that the Federal Government would henceforth hold the 36 state controllers of works responsible for poor quality job on Federal Highways in their respective areas.
He said “state controllers of works are the representatives of the Federal Government in their respective states; we will give them all they need to carry out the job.
“They must, however, ensure that quality job is done on our roads or be held responsible.”
Fashola then directed the controllers to identify roads that were in bad condition, restore road signs on the highways, erect kilometer indicators and properly erect sign posts of towns and villages.
In his remarks, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State said the state government empowered its road maintenance agency for the rehabilitation of state roads.
He said over 50 per cent of vehicles plying the roads were, however, not roadworthy.
Masari urged the relevant authorities to intensify efforts in preventing motorists from overloading their vehicles to reduce accidents

[OPINION] Believe Me, This Buhari Cabinet Isn’t Flying – By Dele Momodu

dele-momodu (1)

Fellow Nigerians, let me start by thanking all the blogs, WhatsApp groups, Facebook and Twitter wizards who make the incredible efforts and sacrifice to mass-circulate my Pendulum column every week. I’m sincerely grateful for your abiding faith in the written word. Let me assure you that you push me to write this piece regularly no matter how tough.
I must also salute all those who reach out to me via emails, SMS and telephone calls offering their appreciation of my humble contribution to nation-building. I’ve just received one such call from a businessman who believes so much in Buhari but feels the man has been encircled by desperate political jobbers who are not bothered whether he fails or succeeds. They are only interested in the allure and lucre of power, he says and he may not be far from the truth.
I truly appreciate the men and women of power who see my weekly sermon from the perspective that I mean no harm but that I am determined to prop up a government I helped bring to fruition in my own little way. It is impossible to forget and ignore my own critics who can never agree with my position on any national or international issue. Unknown to them, they keep me on my toes and force me to hone the elementary logic I learned as an undergraduate student at the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
I wish to say categorically and with all emphasis at my command that the Buhari government is flailing. And only the ubiquitous hypocrites and cheer leaders would fail to say it as it is, that the grunts of the people are fast turning into deafening lamentations. No amount of approbation by a President Obama can detract from the plaintive suffering and cries of the Nigerian people. Indeed, much as I love Obama, we must remember that his primary interest is America and the fight against corruption which is a sub-plot in America’s fight against terrorism.
In case our dear President is unaware, and he feels only the wailing wailers are grumbling, I wish to assure him that this is not the case. Some of the President’s friends and supporters are deeply worried at the sad turn of events. They are wondering what went wrong and what can be done to turn the dangerous slide around. In fact, everything looks to them like a bad dream, a nightmare in reality. But on a personal note, I don’t think the situation is as irredeemable as it seems. The solution lies squarely on the President’s table. Only he can salvage his government from this stupendous slump from grace to grass.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s biggest equity is in his legendary incorruptibility. He must have assumed that this equity is rock solid and unassailable. But while the people truly want a reduction in the level of corruption and general indiscipline, you must replace something with something. Buhari’s team believes the problem they have is as a result of waging a relentless war on corrupt people and the freebies that have suddenly frozen up for their friends and acolytes. Not so simple folks. Where are the jobs to occupy and engage the innocent beneficiaries of corruption? A lot of those who had jobs have lost their means of livelihood. Companies are sacking their workers, as if with a vengeance. Foreign investors are running helter-skelter and many have closed shop already running back to wherever they came from. Everyone wants stability and not sermons. And there is no stability, either in the polity, in the economy, in our currency or indeed in our social life.
Unfortunately, this government has been very high on proselytising and low on performance. Their swansong has become abysmally boring. The people are now less interested in the results of President Jonathan’s recklessness in office but more in President Buhari’s remedial panacea. It is shocking that 16 months after our friends took over power they are not yet tired of moaning and groaning about Jonathan. But we sacked Jonathan because we knew and felt his case was very bad. We supported Buhari because of the mystic that he had the magic wand. We didn’t want to be accused in the future of wasting yet another best President Nigeria should have had, after Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. That is why we worked assiduously for a man we had rejected serially in the past. We must beg this government to wake up from its deep slumber. It would be a huge embarrassment and an unmitigated disaster if it fails. So many Nigerians risked everything to midwife this change. I’m willing to support this government to the very end but they should please listen to our pleas and humble suggestions.
The President needs to re-energise his team. Nigeria is too big and too bold to be controlled by a timid cabinet. We need eagles who can fly high. We should be able to find them in a country of nearly 200 million people. There is no doubt that President Buhari has some good hands in his team but most of them have refused to fly, because they are scared. Many have melted into oblivion and irrelevance. We do not need to mention names. Some jobs are so visible that we do not require masquerades to handle. Some jobs require common-sense and not loquacious rabblerousing. Some members of the team have attracted public odium to this government. They make Buhari look so pitiably bad and that should not be so.
The human rights records should also have been better handled and managed during this second coming after the massive damage he suffered in the past. Fighting wars on all fronts from day one distracted and occupied the government. That game-plan was clearly faulty. They should have known that the temperament and tone of a democratic government is ostensibly different from that of a military junta. I once read that too much anger sometimes beclouds reasoning. The government failed to take certain steps to mitigate against the expected backlash of its many wars. It did not reason that hungry people are not always reasonably tolerant of the cause of their social conditions.
No one is sure if President Buhari was ever inclined or advised by his team to plan its offensive well or if he thought he had the same omnipotent power he had from 1983-85. He would have waited a bit and stabilised his government before unleashing mayhem against the enemies of state. I’m told surprise is one of the deadliest strategies in warfare. Most of the looted resources would have remained in our banks if government had not shown its fangs too early. As a lay man in Economics, I will never understand and appreciate the decision to ban people from paying dollars into their own accounts. What did it matter if dollar was paid in cash or by transfer? That was the beginning of the free-fall of our currency down the economic ladder. A large chunk of the money looted has invariably vamoosed into foreign vaults or under some beds or dug-up holes. Shame!
I strongly recommend that the President rejigs his cabinet, especially his economic team and even replace some of the members. This is what a bank would do if some of its managers were not meeting their targets. No manager is too big to be fired by football clubs. There is nothing new under the sun about this approach to governance. There are so many global examples. In 2014, when Saudi Arabia experienced a surge after the outbreak of the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS) disease, Saudi King Abdullah fired his Health Minister Abdullah al Rabeeah. In July this year, President Raul Castro of Cuba removed his Minister of Economy Marino Murillo from his portfolio amid the economic hardship that was plaguing the country. Just two weeks ago, Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos fired the country’s Finance Minister Armando Manuel. Manuel had presided over an economic recession caused by a sharp dip in oil prices that weakened dollar inflows, hammered the Angolan Kwanza, leading to heavy government borrowing.
The President should borrow from such examples and do the needful without further delay. I’m happy that even the National Assembly is thinking along the same lines. The government does not have time on its hands and at its disposal. Two years would soon evaporate and the third year will come knocking. It has to start working for those Nigerians who put their fate and faith in the hands of Buhari. We have had enough of the blatant excuses that sound more like expressions of hopelessness and helplessness, thus leading to deja vu.
A few priorities must be tackled speedily. None is greater than the issue of power generation which is already witnessing appreciable progress. I believe the Minister of Power, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, should be allowed to concentrate strictly on power and give his other portfolios to equally competent people. I would love to see a former Governor Donald Duke take over works. I do not care WHICH PARTY HE BELONGS. I have deliberately mentioned this great Nigerian who could easily have been our own Obama if we were a country where merit and achievement catapulted people into the highest office. This government would do well to consider a government of National Unity. Since the suffering we are enduring does not discriminate along Party lines, the solution should not ostracise any capable Nigerian.
On the economy, President Buhari should invite and involve the best brains at home and abroad including non-Nigerians. The Bank of England brought in an expert from Canada as its Governor. Dubai invited a Briton to run one of the most ambitious airports on planet Earth. The London Gatwick Airport was sold to a consortium led by a Nigerian. Ghana has just built a world-class Cargo section by Swissport. Before our very eyes, Ghana is attracting the biggest aviation businesses in West Africa. The world has moved beyond our jejune and archaic style of doing things. Our parastatals have become too unwieldy and totally wasteful. We have so many agencies all over the places managing nothing but eating everything. That does not mean a wholesale sale of our national assets but recourse to effective and efficient lean management wherever that may come from. I say emphatically, nothing would change unless we change our retrogressive ways.
Instructively, the National Assembly and the Executive arms of government must cut down on government expenditure drastically. The National Assembly is making sense with some of its recommendations but it is has to go beyond that by actually implementing those recommendations and putting pressure on the Executive to do the same. All the legislative aides, executive aides, delegations to foreign assignments and government’s fleet of aircrafts and motorcades are atrociously over-bloated and unnecessary. I stumbled on a video footage of President Vladimir Putin of Russia’s motorcade. It had nothing more than four (4) vehicles accompanied with escort motorbikes. In 2012, President Putin even went as far as announcing that he and his prime minister will work more from home to cut the disruption caused by their motorcades in the city of Moscow. That is Russia, a global super-power making an effort to run a leaner and more effective governance structure.
In Ghana where I have lived for over a decade, I have seen the simplicity of the Presidential system of governance from Rawlings to Kufuor to the late Atta Mills and now John Dramani Mahama. Her Majesty, the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II in all the glory of her monarchy goes around in a simple motorcade of usually two or three vehicles. The accompanying vehicles are oftentimes unmarked. But the case of Nigeria is a stark contrast. It sometimes looks as if we are war with some imaginary alien foe. Every security outfit competes to feature in the entourage of our respective leaders. Then there are the support vehicles, including ambulances, bomb disposal vehicles and anti-tank machines!
Everything is collapsing except the business of politics. Every government that comes to power seems to be in competition with previous governments in the craze to practice capitalism without capital. Clearly, this is not sustainable and we cannot continue like this. Something has to give. President Buhari must restore confidence again by allowing the change millions of Nigerians voted him for in March 2015 to begin from his desk. It is commonly said that, “desperate times call for desperate measures.” Our time is now.

Gunmen wrecked havoc in Ipakodo, Ikorodu area of Lagos state after they attacked a family of six, killing a man and his two sons while his wife and daughter were brutally murdered.
Punch reported that the attackers, who were suspected to be sent, after killing the man, Celestine Nwokoye, and his sons, also shot his wife and his two daughters, leaving them for dead.
The incident occurred on Thursday on Agbose Street in the Ebute, Ipakodo area around 5am.
The wife and the injured daughters were said to have been rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment as it was learnt that the two deceased sons were three years old and two months old.
A resident of Ebute, who visited the scene, but did not want his name in print, said the attackers were suspected to be sent.
He said, “The man’s house is located on Agbose Street, off Oluodo Junction. He worked at a taxi park in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja. The killers came on Thursday morning. They shot him and all the members of his family. He and two male children died instantly, while they left his wife and the two daughters with bullet injuries.
“The attackers were not robbers; they went to only the man’s apartment. I was told that they did not take away any property. That is why everyone suspects that the killers were sent. They shot all members of his family presumably, so that no one would be able to report to the police.
“But policemen from the Ipakodo division later came to our area to take photographs and remove the bodies. The policemen were all over our area.

A Ghanaian, Enyolam Believe has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly kidnapping her niece in the Ikotun area of the state.
Believe, who had been living in Lagos for the past 17 years, conspired with her friend, Agatha Aigbomiam, to commit the crime last Tuesday.
The eight-year-old victim was alleged to have been kidnapped on her way to school and taken to Ogun State by Aigbomiam.
The victim was said to have raised the alarm which drew the attention of residents, leading to the arrest of both suspects.
A police source said 43-year-old Believe and the victim’s mother had searched for the child, including reporting a case of missing person at a police station.
He said, “The suspect and the girl’s mother are sisters. Believe, however, colluded with her friend, Aigbomiam, to abduct the girl so that she could make money from the mother.
“Their plan was that the friend would kidnap the child and hide her somewhere in Ogun State, while she would negotiate the ransom with the mother on the phone.
“When the girl went missing, the girl’s mother called her and they both searched for the girl. She even suggested that they should report the case to the police. The mother never suspected that she was behind the kidnap.”
The source said while people were looking for the girl, the suspect was also trailing the movement of her friend and the victim on the phone.
He said the kidnapped girl, while in captivity, raised the alarm that Aigbomiam was not her mother and called for help from some Ogun residents, who came to her aid

Comic Nollywood actor, Mr Ibu has revealed the personal struggles he went through after he lost his 2-year-old son five years ago.
According to him, it was due to the negligence of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and he was devastated that after his son’s death, the doctor walked up to him to ask if his son’s corpse could be used for praticals.
The actor, in an interview with Punch, narrated the sad incident.

“After a while, I was told that there was no electricity in the hospital. When I asked if there was no standby generator, they said there was no fuel in it.
“I offered to pay for fuel only to be told that the man that operated the generator was not around.

Nigeria At 56: Read President Buhari’s Independence Speech [Full Text]

buhari_speech

Today – 1st October is a day of celebration for us Nigerians. On this day, 56 years ago our people achieved the most important of all human desires – freedom and independence. We should all therefore give thanks and pray for our founding fathers without whose efforts and toil we would not reap the bounties of today.
2. I know that uppermost in your minds today is the economic crisis. The recession for many individuals and families is real. For some It means not being able to pay school fees, for others it’s not being able to afford the high cost of food (rice and millet) or the high cost of local or international travel, and for many of our young people the recession means joblessness, sometimes after graduating from university or polytechnic.
3. I know how difficult things are, and how rough business is. All my adult life I have always earned a salary and I know what it is like when your salary simply is not enough. In every part of our nation people are making incredible sacrifices.
4. But let me say to all Nigerians today, I ran for office four times to make the point that we can rule this nation with honesty and transparency, that we can stop the stealing of Nigeria’s resources so that the resources could be used to provide jobs for our young people, security, infrastructure for commerce, education and healthcare.
5. I ran for office because I know that good government is the only way to ensure prosperity and abundance for all. I remain resolutely committed to this objective.
6. I believe that this recession will not last.
7. Temporary problems should not blind or divert us from the corrective course this government has charted for our nation. We have identified the country’s salient problems and we are working hard at lasting solutions.
8. To re-cap what I have been saying since the inception of this administration, our problems are security, corruption and the economy, especially unemployment and the alarming level of poverty.
9. On Security, we have made progress. Boko Haram was defeated by last December – only resorting to cowardly attacks on soft targets, killing innocent men, women and children.
10.Nigerians should thank our gallant men of the Armed Forces and Police for rescuing large areas of the country captured by insurgents. Now, residents in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States, as well as several neighbouring states go about their daily business in relative safety. People can go to mosques, churches, market places in reasonable safety.
11. Commuters can travel between cities, towns and villages without fear. Credit for this remarkable turn-round should go to our Armed Forces, the Police, various sponsored and private vigilante groups, the local traditional leaders. Security is a top to bottom concern and responsibility.
12. Besides Boko Haram, we are confronting other long-running security issues, namely herdsmen vs farmers, cattle rustling, kidnappings. This Administration is firmly resolved to tackle these challenges and to defeat them.
13. A new insurgency has reared up its head in the shape of blowing up gas and oil pipelines by groups of Niger Delta Militants. This Administration will not allow these mindless groups to hold the country to ransom.
14. What sense is there to damage a gas line as a result of which many towns in the country including their own town or village is put in darkness as a result? What logic is there in blowing up an export pipeline and as a result income to your state and local governments and consequently their ability to provide services to your own people is reduced?
15. No group can unlawfully challenge the authority of the Federal Government and succeed. Our Administration is fully sympathetic to the plight of the good people of Niger Delta and we are in touch with the State Governments and leaderships of the region. It is known that the clean-up of the Ogoniland has started. Infrastructural projects financed by the Federal Government and post amnesty programme financing will continue.
16. We have however, continued to dialogue with all groups and leaders of thought in the region to bring lasting peace.
17. Corruption is a cancer which must be fought with all the weapons at our disposal. It corrodes the very fabric of government and destroys society. Fighting corruption is Key, not only to restoring the moral health of the nation, but also to freeing our enormous resources for urgent socio-economic development.
18.In fighting corruption, however, the government would adhere strictly by the rule of law. Not for the first time I am appealing to the judiciary to join the fight against corruption.
19. The Third Plank in this Administration’s drive to CHANGE Nigeria is re-structuring the economy. Economies behaviour is cyclical. All countries face ups and downs. Our own recession has been brought about by a critical shortage of foreign exchange. Oil price dropped from an average of hundred USD per barrel over the last decade to an average of forty USD per barrel this year and last.
20. Worse still, the damage perpetrated by Niger Delta thugs on pipelines sometimes reduced Nigeria’s production to below One million barrels per day against the normal two point two million barrels per day. Consequently, the naira is at its weakest, but the situation will stabilize.
21. But this is only temporary. Historically about half our dollar export earnings go to importation of petroleum and food products! Nothing was saved for the rainy days during the periods of prosperity. We are now reaping the whirlwinds of corruption, recklessness and impunity.
22.There are no easy solutions, but there are solutions nonetheless and Government is pursuing them in earnest. We are to repair our four refineries so that Nigeria can produce most of our petrol requirements locally, pending the coming on stream of new refineries. That way we will save ten billion USD yearly in importing fuel.
23. At the same time, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Bank have been mobilized to encourage local production of rice, maize, sorghum, millet and soya beans. Our target is to achieve domestic self-sufficiency in these staples by 2018.
24. Already farmers in thirteen out of thirty six states are receiving credit support through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers Programme. Kebbi state alone this year is expected to produce one million tonnes of locally grown rice, thanks to a favourable harvest this year. As part of the 13 states, Lagos and Ogun are also starting this programme. Rice alone for example costs Nigeria two billion USD to import.
25.The country should be self-sufficient in basic staples by 2019. Foreign exchange thus saved can go to industrial revival requirements for retooling, essential raw materials and spare parts. It is in recognition of the need to re-invigorate agriculture in our rural communities that we are introducing the LIFE programme.
26. Government recognises that irrigation is key to modern agriculture: that is why the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources are embarking on a huge programme of development of lakes, earth dams and water harvesting schemes throughout the country to ensure that we are no longer dependent on rain-fed agriculture for our food requirements.
27. In addition, government is introducing Water Resources Bill encompassing the National Water Resources Policy and National Irrigation and Drainage Policy to improve management of water and irrigation development in the country. We are reviving all the twelve River Basin Authorities, namely;
