The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 66-year-old man, said to have been practising as a lawyer with no certificate for 22 years.
The suspect, Kayode Jones, who was paraded on Thursday by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, was arrested in a lawyer’s attire, at the Lagos Judiciary 2016/2017 legal year event on Tuesday, in the premises of the Igbosere Division of the state High Court.
Upon interrogation, the suspect, who was discovered to have been arrested earlier over a similar offence, maintained that he is a lawyer.
Defending his claim, he boasted that he had appeared before several judges in courts, revealing however that out of the 14 cases he had appeared in courts for, he had won only one.
“I have been a lawyer for 22 years. I picked up the trait after I won my first case against Niger Guard Security. I used to be a private guard with the security company.
“I took them to court when they did not pay my salary in 1995. Luckily, all my prayers were granted and I was allowed to represent myself in the case.
“I appeared before Justice Sotuminu and I won the motion. Then, I did not wear the robe. But I started wearing the robe in January 2013.
“Also, I have done nothing wrong in this case and should not be arrested, as Section 22 (6) of Legal Practitioner Law of Lagos State, 2004, states ‘no proceeding shall commence after the offence has been committed for three years’. So I have done nothing wrong.”
When asked if he read law, he replied, “I went to the Chartered Institute of Administration in Lagos, where I studied Public Administration in the 90s. I read it up to the intermediate level.
“In 1994, I was employed as a Litigation Officer to a law firm in Surulere, Lagos.
“Along the line, I stumbled on the High Court Rules that someone who is not a lawyer could appear in person. That was where I summoned the courage to represent myself in court against Niger Guard Security.
“I am a member of NBA Lagos State as a Litigation Officer and I pay practicing fees and branch dues. But I have been questioned on this same matter that got me arrested by the branch chairman, Alex Mouka, who took me to Lion’s Building Police Division, where I was warned not to practice or take up law cases again since I was not qualified to do so.
“I told them that my principal allowed me to practice, and also authorised me to file cases in court and pay the practising fee, which was N300.
“The Federal High Court assisted me with it because I don’t have money to buy any of them.
“So far, I have appeared before Justices Yunusa, Ofili and Buba at the Court of Appeal and none of them suspected I was fake.
“I have appeared in court 14 times, but won only one case, which was that against the Niger Guard security,” Vanguard reports Jones as saying.
He then pleaded for leniency and asked for a second chance.
“Since I have been arrested before and I have been warned already, I should be given a second chance. I will quit totally,
Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Owoseni said the suspect will be charged to court.

“Why I Kidnapped My Sister’s Child” – Suspect Kidnapper Confesses

defendant

The Police in Lagos State has taken into custody a Ghanaian identified as Enyolam Believe, for allegedly kidnapping her niece in the Ikotun area of the state.
The Punch reports that a police source, who would not want his name mentioned, stated that “the suspect and the girl’s mother are sisters. Believe, however, colluded with her friend, Aigbomiam, to abduct the girl so that she could make money from the mother.”
The suspect conspired with her friend, Agatha Aigbomiam, to commit the crime last Tuesday.
They confessed to the crime while being paraded before journalists at the police command headquarters in Ikeja yesterday.
The 8-year-old child was abducted on her way to school and taken to Ogun State by Aigbomiam.
It was reported that the little girl cried out loudly to draw the attention of residents which led to the arrest of the two suspects.
The police source added that the 43-year-old Believe and the mother of the girl had searched for the child, including reporting a case of missing person at a police station.
The source added, “Their plan was that the friend would kidnap the child and hide her somewhere in Ogun State, while she would negotiate the ransom with the mother on the phone.
“When the girl went missing, the girl’s mother called her and they both searched for the girl. She even suggested that they should report the case to the police. The mother never suspected that she was behind the kidnap.”
He said the kidnapped girl raised alarm while in captivity, shouting that Aigbomiam was not her mother and called for help from some Ogun residents, who came to her aid.
The matter was said to have been reported to a community leader, who called in the police.
According to the police source, “When the police discovered that Aigbomiam was not alone in the crime and she was receiving calls from Believe, they decided to play along. They asked her to invite Believe to Ogun State.
“It was when she arrived that the police arrested her.
“The case was subsequently transferred to Lagos State where the offence was committed. That was where the mother of the girl saw that her own sister was behind her ordeal.”
Believe told newsmen that her plan was to make N30,000 from the kidnap, which she needed for a business.
She said, “I have my own children. I needed money badly that time and I thought of different ideas, which didn’t work.
“So, I decided to kidnap my sister’s daughter and demand N30,000 ransom from her. I involved my friend because I didn’t want to be the one to take the girl from school. I don’t know what came over me.”
Also, Aigbomiam, a 42-year-old trader from Ekpoma in Edo State, said Believe asked her to kidnap the victim after she returned from a surgery in Benin.
“She said she wanted to use the girl to collect some money from her sister. She just showed me the girl’s school and I kidnapped her around 7.30am on Tuesday, while she was going to school.
“I took her to my relative’s house in Ogun State. I was stupid for doing such a thing.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspects will be arraigned in court at the end of investigation, while advising parents and guardians to be vigilant over their children and wards.

“The amount falls into two categories. One, recovery from the Federal Government and the state governments, and recoveries from politicians, and individuals that reported their cases to the EFCC and whose money had been returned.
“We have Recovery Account at the Central Bank of Nigeria. The last time I checked, we have recovered from politicians over N500.5m, that make up the N1bn. Nobody should justify the illegality that has been going on.”

One of the suspects arrested for allegedly kidnapping four landlords at the Lekki Gardens Estate, Isheri North area of Lagos State, James Kegbe, also known as JJ, has told the police that he was enjoying his share of the ransom money when the police swooped and arrested him.

Kegbe, an indigene of Ondo State, according to the police, was among the gang that kidnapped the landlords and their physical trainer while they were on a morning exercise routine and demanded a whopping demanded N300 million for each of them before they would be released.

Emir Sanusi Denies Attacking President Buhari

emir

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has denied quotes attributed to him on some social media platforms, which denounced President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and All Progressives Congress, APC, as failures.
Sanusi, in a message sent to online publication, Premium Times said: ‘’The quotes were fabricated and attributed to me to create misunderstanding and disharmony between myself and the President. I do not know who is behind these quotes.
“But they seem to be part of a new and insidious strategy where quotes are attributed to individuals in order to mischievously score cheap political points and plant disaffection between persons. These so-called reports never state exactly where my statements were made and in what forum or in whose presence, nor do the faceless cowards behind them have the courage to write their names.”
Sanusi said while he believed that “all intelligent and well-meaning Nigerians” could immediately discern that the quotes were maliciously fabricated, “it is only proper if I formally disassociate myself from them.
“It is a well known fact that I was illegally suspended from my position as CBN governor precisely because of my role in exposing the massive looting of our national treasury by the last administration, and that I have since shown my total support for the war against corruption being waged by the current administration.
“I am also convinced that everyone recognises the remarkable improvement in the security situation in the North, the greatest evidence of which was the incident-free celebration of Eid el Kabir throughout the country.”

president-buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he would not stop blaming his predecessors, which include Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo, among others.
Speaking at an event tagged, “The Conversation: An evening with creative youths,” held inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Buhari said: “I am going to bore you with what we met. I know that I am being accused in the papers of passing the buck, but passing the buck is sometimes absolutely necessary to remind people who take things for granted.
“When we came in, I screamed to high heavens because I had promised a lot while seeking votes.
“I said where is the saving? There was no saving. There was no infrastructure, power, rails, roads, there was none. What did we spend the money on? I was told buying food and petrol.
“Where were the billions going? We conducted a study and found out that the oil marketers were committing fraud on at least one third ‎of what they were importing, which is about 25 per cent of our foreign exchange.
‎”The youth must watch our elite, especially with the condition we found ourselves. It is unpatriotic for anybody to pretend that economically we have no problem.
“I have bored you with this long explanation because there are things that could be hidden from you by those that have mismanaged the country in the last 16, 17 years”.

tinubu

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that the economic recession in Nigeria, requires sacrifice from all Nigerians to see the nation come of the tough situation.
Tinubu made this known while speaking at the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers’ investiture of its president, Oluwaseyi Emmanuel Abe, on Wednesday night, September 28 in Lagos.
According to him, Nigeria is blessed with both human and natural resources, which it can properly harness to come out of the recession, Vanguard reports.
The APC national leader also spoke on the significance of electricity in driving economic development as he recalled that Lagos state invested in private power project during his time as governor.
Also speaking at the event, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, said the country should rely on taxes and not oil.
Atiku noted that Nigeria’s biggest problem is addiction to oil revenues.
He decried the belief that the country is doomed “unless oil flows and oil money fills the Federation Account for our tiers of government to share.”
According to Atiku, Tinubu was right to demand that Oyegun follow party rules.
He also noted that the APC is having challenges because it failed to follow its own rules.
Tinubu had asked Oyegun to resign for derailing the party’s agenda in the Ondo APC primary election.
Tinubu made the demand on Sunday, September 25, 2016 in a communiqué from his media office.

rauf-aregbesola

Pardons are granted in many countries when individuals have demonstrated that they have fulfilled their debt to society.Pardons are granted in many countries when individuals have demonstrated that they have fulfilled their debt to society.
Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has granted amnesty to six inmates serving various jail terms in Ilesha prison, Kirikiri maximum prison, Lagos and Ibara, Abeokuta Federal prison.
Information about the pardon is contained in a statement issued by Mr Adedapo Adeniji, the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions and Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy on Thursday in Osogbo.
Adeniji stated that the governor granted the amnesty in commemoration of the 56th Independence Anniversary of the nation.
He noted that “pursuant to the advice and recommendations of the State Advisory Council on prerogative of mercy, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, in exercising his powers under Section 212(1)(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) has graciously granted amnesty to the following inmates.
He listed the names to include Ayodeji Olatunbosun (Ilesha Prison), Alfa Mukaila Salawu, Dayo Ilesanmi and Ojo Adeye (Kirikiri maximum Prison, Lagos). thers are Tunde Adegoke and Sgt. Adam Baruwa (Ibara prison, Abeokuta).
A pardon is a government decision to allow a person who has been convicted of a crime, to be free and absolved of that conviction, as if never convicted.
Today, pardons are granted in many countries when individuals have demonstrated that they have fulfilled their debt to society, or are otherwise considered to be deserving.
Pardons are sometimes offered to persons who are wrongfully convicted or who claim they have been wrongfully convicted.
In some jurisdictions, accepting such a pardon implicitly constitutes an admission of guilt even though cases of wrongful conviction are nowadays more often dealt with by appeal than by pardon.
However, a pardon is sometimes offered when innocence is undisputed to avoid the cost of retrial and clemency plays an important role when capital punishment is applied.

A 49-year-old businessman was recently arrested for raping his 15-year-old daughter.
The businessman identified as Tony Ehumadu, was caught raping his daughter, by his wife who is a custom officer, in their house in the Oko-Oba area of Abule Egba, Lagos state.
Ehumadu who went ahead to explain how he raped his eldest daughter twice, said his wife didn’t want to report him to the police, but had told her brother who eventually took the matter to the police.
Here’s what he said:
“I did the abominable act with my eldest daughter. But I only raped her twice. I don’t know what came over me. I am convinced that forces beyond me led me into committing the crime. Both incidents happened on Fridays. One Friday night, one of my friends invited me to a naming ceremony around Power Line, New Oko-Oba. I came back home drunk but my wife was not around. All my children, except the eldest, were asleep.
Immediately, I rushed in and raped her. I did not meet her as a virgin. But the second time, my wife was at home. That Friday night, we were all watching a movie, when I suddenly stood up and went straight into my daughter’s room and started raping her. It was at that point that my wife caught me and started shouting. My wife did not want to go to the police because of the embarrassment it would bring to the family and because of her reputation as a Customs officer. But her brother did.”

FG plans 45,101MW electricity generation by 2030

FG plans 45,101MW electricity generation by 2030

The Federal Government has unveiled a sustainable energy for All-Agenda (SE4ALL-AA) that would increase Nigeria’s power generation the present 3,000 Mega Watts (MW) to 45,101MW by 2030.
Government planned to achieve this target gradually from the present 3,121MW from fossil fuel to 18,200MW by 2030.
The Federal Government, which disclosed this its Sustainable Energy For All Action Agenda document obtained by The Guardian on Tuesday, also expected renewable energy generation to reach 13,800MW.
It declared that by 3030, the country would be generating 13,000MW from gas, 3,200MW from coal; 2,000MW from nuclear; 5,000MW from solar; 1,000MWfrom solar thermal; and 1,100MW from biomass.
Director, Press, Ministry of Power, Timothy Oyedeji said in a statement that the Federal Government has adopted four documents, which are National Energy Efficiency Action Plans (NEEAP), National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAP), Sustainable Energy for All-Action Agenda (SE4ALL-AA) and the Nigerian Power Sector Investment, Opportunities and Guidelines.
According to him, these documents are expected to promote access to regular electricity in the country. He disclosed that the development of NREAP, has received tremendous support from European Union (EU).
Oyedeji added that the German Government funded GIZ through the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP), underscored by the believe that inefficient use of energy supply will increase environmental problems.
He added that it also believed that it would increase cost of goods and services.
“It can also compound the problem of access by large army of our population as it would be expedient to avoid investment in power in excess of actual requirement, because of scarcity of resources.
“The second document is the National Renewable Energy policy document which is developed as a key element embedded in the current electricity reform, which hoped to radically increase the use of renewable energy sources in Nigeria.
“This is premised on the fact that Nigeria will put into use its abundant resources in both renewable and non-renewable energy sources, as the country looks forward to capitalizing on its economic growth potentials.”
He said that the deregulation of the sector, which entails greater need for renewable sources would also be required for Nigeria’s future energy needs, in view of its growing population and concomitant energy demands.
He explained that the SE4ALL initiative was launched to promote access to sustainable energy as a critical and essential component of all economic activities globally.
“It is in recognition of the strong government’s involvement in driving this initiative in the country would require joint efforts of stakeholders in both private and public sectors with government taking the lead.
The 2015 draft document is aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s vast energy potentials through harmonization with other policy initiatives and action plans, as well as provision of technical and financial supports for the attainment of set goals and objectives.
“It is key to doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, ensuring universal access to modern services and doubling the contribution of renewables in the global energy mix,” he said.

Residents of Amangballa village in Afikpo North Local Council of Ebonyi State woke up on Tuesday to discover the body of a 92- year-old Horri Oko Eluu dangling over a rope at the Ogo Square.
An eyewitness said that the deceased’s sons who were abashed over the abominable incident, had quickly untied their father’s dangling body and deposited it in the mortuary at Mater Miscrecordia Hospital, Afikpo.
Wondering what would have made a nonagenarian to commit suicide, inquiries revealed that he was allegedly in a contentious battle with one of his brothers over a parcel of land.
One of his sons, Okpara Oko, dismissed insinuations that the quarrel over a piece of land might have caused his father to take his life.

House of Reps yet to receive court papers on suit instituted by Jibin

House of Reps yet to receive court papers on suit instituted by Jibin

The House of Representatives has said it is yet to receive any court papers regarding the suspension of the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Jibrin Abdulmumin.
It added that while the suspended lawmaker has a right to go to court, there is a clear separation of powers between the three arms of government.
The Chairman, Committee on Media and Publicity, Hon. Namdas Abdulrazak, while briefing journalists yesterday, noted that the House is empowered by the constitution to have its own rules.
Namdas explained that Jibrin breached the collective privileges of members with his blanket statements that the House is corrupt.
“…That we are all corrupt, that the public hearings and investigations are corrupt…the House has rules and if anyone errs, there are certain sanctions which are applied. What we have done is within our rules,” he said.
“There is no petition against any member before the Ethics Committee and we cannot investigate based on newspaper publications. He made allegations which he could not substantiate,” Namdas added.
Meanwhile Jibrin’s office in the National Assembly has been sealed by the ‘Sergent-at-Arms’, the security arm of the legislature.
This followed his suspension by the House on Wednesday after the Committee on Ethics and Privileges found him guilty for breach of privileges of members of the House and sundry acts of misconduct.
The suspended lawmaker’s 1.05 office was sealed at about 2.45p.m. Some of his aides were in the office when the ‘Sergent-at-Arms’ accompanied by some policemen arrived. The aides were allowed to remove their personal effects.
Jibrin was suspended for 180 legislative days in the first instance, and barred from holding a position of responsibility until the end of the eighth assembly. He would also be required to tender a formal written apology before he can resume.
He has however, vowed to challenge his suspension in court and insisted he would not apologise.
The House has been embroiled in crises since the removal of Jibrin as the Chairman of Appropriation Committee in July, just before the lawmakers embarked on their summer recess.
Employing a scorched earth policy, Jibrin had unleashed a tirade of accusations against the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker, Yussuff Sulaimon Lasun, Chief Whip, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, and the chairmen of nine standing committees. He accused them of corruption, fraud and making ‘senseless’ insertions into the 2016 budget.
Meanwhile, the suspended lawmaker has written to the members of the House demanding that they return running costs which they receive monthly.
In a copy of the letter which he made available to THISDAY, he said the N10 million which they collect monthly should be returned within one week.
“I hereby demand that if you have illegally taken or stolen any money meant for the running cost of your offices for your entire stay in the House, you should return the money within one week to the Clerk of the National Assembly and for the purpose of clarity, I am referring to about 10 million naira you collect from tax payers’ money monthly,” he said.
“The Clerk will provide you with official account details, failure of which I will take necessary action to ensure that you return any money stolen and stand witness against you in case of prosecution. I have written to the clerk of the National Assembly to stand by in anticipation. In the face of the revenue challenges and biting hardship the country is currently facing, there is no better time the country needs such money than now,” Jibrin added

Ogun pastor denies being hypnotised in shrine

Ogun pastor denies being hypnotised in shrine

The pastor who was allegedly transfixed in a shrine in Ketu community, Ayetoro, in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Wale Fagbire, has denied being struck by idols while destroying the shrine.
At a press conference on Thursday convened by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun State, Fagbire told journalists that he followed a divine instruction he got in a revelation.
Fagbire, who presides over Christ Apostolic Church, (Ona-Iye) in Ayetoro, said he was instructed not to utter a word after destroying the shrines, adding that he was motionless after the ‘divine assignment.’
The embattled pastor had on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, told his congregation that he was directed by God to destroy all the shrines in Ketu community.
But, in his attempts to destroy the shrines, he allegedly got stuck in the first set of shrines he entered, prompting people in the area to raise the alarm.
Fagbire said he deliberately waited in the shrines for the idol worshippers to see him.
He said, “God told me that I should go to the shrines to bring out those things for the liberation of Ayetoro. God told me to do three things in the shrines.
“That when I get there, I should evacuate, step aside and watch the film. He said I should not say anything when people come out to see me. So, I did as instructed by God on that day.
“I got there around 5am and after I took out those things, God told me to wait and stay and I did.
“God also told me to keep quiet. It was not their gods that held me; it was the idol worshippers that struck me with their charms.
“When I was taken to the palace, I told them that all my actions were directed by God and not human beings or the church of God. Although, they tried many charms on me, none was effective. I am healthy. I followed the instruction of God that I should be quiet and they also know the truth.”

He said when he was taken to the palace of the Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Abdulaziz, he narrated what happened.
Reacting to the report, the state Chairman of CAN, Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, said media report of the incident was exaggerated, adding that the briefing was to clear the misconceptions.
The Regional Coordinator of Yewa/Awori, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Apostle Lola Dada, alleged that the idol worshippers asked the pastor’s family to contribute N300,000 while the CAN was asked to pay N200,000, to appease the gods.
Dada, who spoke for the state CAN chairman, said, “He (Pastor Fagbire) was handed over to the police and the police charged the case to court.
“The idol worshipers withdrew the case from the court; they said they cannot take the son of their late Oba to court and the case was withdrawn the same day.”
He alleged that the idol worshippers went to Jesus Triumphant Army Church at Ayetoro which was headed by Pastor Wale Olojede, because the church was close to the shrines Fagbire destroyed.
He said, “They said it was the church that encouraged him to do what he did.
“So, the idol worshippers transferred the aggression to the church. They barricaded the church with sacrifice and palm fronds, but the Christian youths removed them.
“They asked the family of the pastor to pay N300,000 while CAN should bring N200,000 for the sacrifice to appease their gods, but, no money was given to them and peace has returned to the town.”
The police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed that the traditionalists had withdrawn the case.

Four million businesses advertise on Facebook
Four million businesses advertise on Facebook

Over four million businesses currently advertise on Facebook, with 70 per cent outside the United States of America.
According to the Facebook, which disclosed this on Wednesday, the fastest growing region is South East Asia with the following countries: Vietnam, Indonesia, Greece, Ukraine and Philippines.
Founded in 2004, Facebook, founded by Mark Zuckerberg, claimed that its mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.
The social media platform currently has 1.04 billion daily active users on average worldwide and 7.2 million daily visitors from Nigeria.
It further disclosed that the top five countries based on yearly growth are: U.S, Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico and the United Kingdom, stressing that over 85 per cent of business pages use mobile and 40 per cent of active advertisers have created a Facebook ad on mobile.

According to it, findings have also shown that more than 30 per cent small and medium sized business pages on Facebook are women owned.
Facebook’s simplest tools have helped convert these businesses to advertise. Two top examples are boosted posts or promoted pages.
More than 20 per cent of active advertisers created video ads in August. The platform disclosed that any business can use it, because it is easy to use. It pointed out that in a new mobile economy, Facebook helps small businesses become large and local businesses become global.

Edo guber: APC used Oshiomhole’s aide to rig Oredo election – PDP

Edo guber: APC used Oshiomhole’s aide to rig Oredo election – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) used one of Governor Adams Oshimhole’s trusted aides, Osakpanwam Eriyo, to rig the outcome of the Wednesday’s governorship election in Edo State in Oredo Local Government Area.
The party, therefore, called on the Inspector-General Police, Ibrahim Idris, to immediately arrest Eriyo and bring him to justice.
In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, PDP said its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, secured “a massive victory over the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)” but Eriyo allegedly invaded the collation centre along with several armed men.
“During this invasion, Mr. Osakpanwam Eriyo forcefully removed all result sheets used in collating results for the LGA,” the statement added.
PDP accused security agents of colluding with him to rig the election in the area, observing that it has severally given warnings about the plan of the ruling APC to attack LGA collation centres where it believed that the results of the elections to be unfavourable.

“Further to this, we hereby call on the Inspector- General of Police and the heads of the relevant security agencies to immediately arrest Eriyo and his accomplices.
“We also urge the IGP and other security agencies to immediately retrieve the election result sheets and return them safely to INEC to enable the electoral body complete the electoral process.
“It is imperative that the Nigerian Police Force immediately arrest Eriyo as a means of building confidence in the electorate,” the party warned.
PDP governorship candidate, Ize-Iyamu had said APC could not have won Oredo LGA despite evidence of violence at George Idah Primary collation centre by suspected thugs.
He said his team would examine all the results of the election, which they collated from the field and publish in the newspaper what should have been the actual result.

Clinton, Trump clash in fiery first debate

Clinton, Trump clash in fiery first debate
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton (R) speaks as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump (L) listens during the Presidential Debate at Hofstra University on September 26, 2016 in Hempstead, New York.(AFP)
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump bickered and traded insults in a fiery US presidential debate Monday, as they aggressively pitched their case to tens of millions of American voters.
With the White House rivals in a dead heat six weeks before election day, Clinton from the get-go painted her Republican rival as out of touch and having a tenuous relationship with the truth, willing to say “crazy things” to get elected.
“You live in your own reality” said the 68-year old Democrat, who accused Trump of launching his political career on a “racist lie” — the birther conspiracy theory that questioned President Barack Obama’s citizenship.
Trump, who faces tough questions about his suitability for the Oval Office, started out with a more restrained tone — he even ditched his red power tie for a more statesmanlike blue.
But he quickly went on the offensive, repeatedly interrupting Clinton with verbal jabs.
The celebrity businessman branded Clinton a “typical politician. All talk, no action. Sounds good, doesn’t work.”
In feisty exchanges on the economy, Trump reprised the themes that have catalyzed his improbable campaign, blaming Clinton and the political class for losing jobs to Mexico and China through bad trade deals.
“Our country is suffering because people like secretary Clinton have made such bad decisions in terms of our jobs and in terms of what’s going on,” he said.
He demanded Clinton — a former secretary of state, first lady and US senator — account for her time in government: “You’ve been doing this for 30 years. Why are you just thinking about these solutions right now? For 30 years, you’ve been doing it.”
Clinton responded by accusing Trump of having “stiffed” small businesses throughout his business career.
Demanding Trump release his taxes, in keeping with election custom, she accused him of backing an economic platform amounting to “the most extreme” package of tax cuts for the wealthy in US history.
“I call it trumped up trickle-down, because that’s exactly what it would be,” she quipped.
Trump said he would release his tax returns, “when she releases her 33,000 e-mails that have been deleted,” alluding to the Democrat’s use of a private email server as secretary of state.

– Super Bowl of politics –
This Super Bowl of politics took place at Hofstra University on Long Island, a mere 60-minute drive from Manhattan and chaired by NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt.
This first 2016 presidential debate could be pivotal in deciding whether Clinton will become the first woman president, or if Trump can pull off the greatest upset in US political history.
When the celebrity businessman launched his campaign in June 2015, bookmakers put his odds at 100/1 and he was roundly mocked.
But the 70-year-old weathered allegations of bigotry and sexism to triumph in a vicious Republican primary campaign.
He now has a real shot at being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on January 20.
Six weeks out from election day the polls have tightened to a virtual dead heat.
Trump’s biggest handicap may be accusations that he has a weak grasp of policy — which he sought to counter by accusing his rival of sowing chaos in the Middle East during her tenure as secretary of state.
“It’s a total mess, under your direction, to a large extent,” Trump said.
But he appeared on shaky ground as he defended his refusal to reveal his plan for defeating the Islamic State group.
“You’re telling the enemy everything you want to do. No wonder you’ve been fighting ISIS your entire adult life,” he said of the group that only came to prominence in the last decade.
Clinton — perhaps the most qualified presidential candidate since George Bush senior or Dwight Eisenhower — has a massive organizational advantage, a bigger campaign warchest, a lead in the popular vote and is in a notably stronger position state-by-state.
But she remains deeply unpopular. In a country split 50/50 between Democrats and Republicans, only 40 percent of voters say they have a favorable view of her.
In the last two presidential elections, young, black, Hispanic and Asian-American voters turned out in record numbers for Obama.
Clinton’s campaign has struggled so far to match that level of enthusiasm.
Only 47 percent of voters aged 18 to 34 say they will definitely vote this time round, that is down from 74 percent when Obama was first elected.

I Never Said Buhari Begged Me To Make Him President’ – Bola Tinubu

TinubuColloqium

Tinubu allegedly made the comments when he received a segment of APC chieftains from the South West who paid him a solidarity visit late on Monday.
He was quoted to have said: “I regret building APC and giving Buhari a platform to become president.
“We all knew he didn’t merit to be president, but you know how we politicians behave when we are desperate for electoral position; We beg.
“That was how President Buhari always and frequently came to my private house here in Ikoyi with his entourage which included that Nasiru and others.
“At a point, he was practically living in my house, under my roof. The room he was sleeping was just 6-7 steps from my own private room. I was building his confidence because he didn’t have it. He was even scared of Atiku and Rabiu.
“What I ate, he ate. My security was his security because he expressed fears about the security provided by the Jonathan government. He was afraid of Jonathan.
“Now they occupy Aso Rock and they think Asiwaju Tinubu is finished. He is using people I brought from obscurity against me. Now they say my mouth is smelling. They say I’m no longer relevant. The battle line is drawn, I will show them the meaning of Asiwaju.
“I know they have surrounded my house. They are there outside. You can’t see them but I know where they are. I see them, but I am not afraid of them. They know that.”
When asked “what next” by one of the loyalists, who said: “What do we do now?” Tinubu was quoted to have replied: “Don’t worry, just watch. Time will tell, I built this party and I can destroy it, but for now, I vow, PDP must win Ondo State.”
